G’day mate! (I had to say it – please don’t hate me 😉). ‘Visiting Perth without a car. Let’s eco travel (to compensate my carbon footprint flying to Australia 🇦🇺 🤣)’ – that’s the title I planned for this post. Instead I chose the above and let me explain. I went to Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺 not because this place was on my travel bucket list but because I found a one way ticket at €160/£150/$210 (with suitcase 🛄) from Singapore on Air Asia and that’s super cheap. Never heard of Perth before so, I thought ‘what the heck let’s go!’. And do you know what? I quite liked it! 😎 Weather was great (30 degrees ☀ , February is summer remember 😉), beaches were amazing, and there were quite a few nice day trips to do too! So, without further due, let me tell you what I have seen in Perth and hopefully you’ll put that place on your list of cities to visit when in Australia 🇦🇺 ! 😃
Exploring the city
Perth is the capital of Western Australia and with 2m of inhabitants, you still get a feeling of a small city.
You can get there flying internationally and recently Qantas announced a Perth 🇦🇺 – London 🇬🇧 route non-stop!!! 😲 Yes that’s right, check this article just right here to know more about it. In the meantime, you can reach Perth flying domestically from Melbourne, Sydney etc. Check out Tiger Air for this, they offer quite competitive prices vs. Virgin Australia.
Transport in Perth is really good with good running metro, trains and buses. No need for a car to visit the city but if you want to get around Western Virginia, then a car is a must.
TIP: First time in my life that I am in a city that provides free transport. That’s right, there are free CAT buses (Central Area Buses) with different lines making your life easier to see the city at no cost – here is the link to the official website.
The essentials to see
I was staying very close to the city (Townsend Lodge, cheap and clean) and I was able to get to main attractions walking (or using CAT).
#1 A cruise on the Swan River
I started my walk from Langley Park via Barrack Street Jetty and finished at Elizabeth Quay with great views on Perth and its skyscrapers. There is walk trail that goes around the Swan River which is 10km long – here is the map to give you an idea. Enjoy the birds and the beauty of the river that ends its journey in the Indian Ocean.
#2 The Bell Tower
Whilst you are around Barrack Jetty street, you can visit the Bell Tower! For £10/€11.50, you can visit it with a tour and all exploratory talks – you’ll need 45 min and be there at either 10.30am or 2.30pm from Monday to Saturday. You can also avoid the tour and do it at your own leisure. I did not visit it but guess what? Thanks to the internet, you can have a virtual tour! Feels like you’re there, right? 🤣 What a nice view!!! 🤩
#3 Supreme Court gardens
Next to the Bell Tower are the Supreme Court gardens where there are life size kangaroos!!!! The first kangaroos I have ever seen!!! Well, they are not really real but still!! 😉 How exciting!!! 😆 Apart from that, those are lovely gardens with beautiful sculptures, trees and flowers. It is a nice green place to give you some peace after walking around the city!
#4 A few other ideas to visit
You can also see Perth Zoo, Kings Park and Botanical Gardens (I missed that one! 😔) and go check out the town hall! The city center itself has loads of shops, restaurants and also pedestrian streets with cool street art! 😁
The city is full of events
I went there end of January/early February 2018 and was not expecting that many events to take place. First there was a free open air Opera (La Bohème), in the Supreme Court Gardens. There was so many people coming with their picnic blankets, baskets, wine 🍷 😉 and other snacks! That same weekend was a Buskers Weekend with loads of buskers coming worldwide to perform all day long in the streets of Perth. And finally Perth Festival was due to start on 9th February and is running until 4th March! And I don’t mention all other events the city is holding with concert at the Arena, comedy shows and so on. Here is the official link for all the events in the city.
FUN FACT: Heath Ledger (aka Joker in Dark Knights) was born in Perth and Hugh Jackman attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth too!
But.. the best part of Perth is out of the city
Sorry Perth but I took a train from central train station to Fremantle and fell in love with this place. It is a small suburb of Perth, by the sea, at around 30 min train ride. Lots of art galleries, the inevitable Fremantle markets and loads of places to have drinks and vegan lunch. I had a great vegan hot dog (junk food I know 😔) at the Wassup Dog Gourmet Hotdogs, I highly recommend it 😊. Fremantle has also very nice beaches especially the South one. But my favourite discovery was the view on the city with yellow lines painted perfectly on all the buildings. EPIC! 🤩
TIP: They also have free CAT system!! Go to the beaches from the train station using this system!
Other things to do if you have a car 🚗
I will be covering in the next posts some cool day trips like a day in the paradise island of Rottnest, Winery and Chocolate factories (😋 ) and The Pinnacles since these are a must-do in Perth. Western Australia has loads of wineries and make awesome wine (especially white). In less than 30 min, you can visit several wineries offering their tasting tours (great right?). The Pinnacles is amazing to see – it is quite a drive (over 2 hours) but you can jump on a tour bus and forget about driving. Watch this space for those 2 posts coming soon! 😉
You will definitely need a car if you want to see the Gap-Natural Bridge (5 hours South East from Perth). It is quite a beautiful thing to see (I haven’t).
Go and see the tallest lighthouse in Cape Leeuwin (4 hours drive South from Perth) and that’s where you’ll see 2 oceans that meet: Indian and Southern Oceans.
That’s it! I hope that you found this post interesting but mostly that you discovered a bit of Perth and its region and added it as a stop in your future trip to Australia 🇦🇺 !!
Check out the video of this trip
And if you liked it, give it a thumbs up and share it! 🙏
Until next time, Go and Explore! 😉
